Tips on Conserving Heat During the Winter |
|
|
- Seal all cracks inside between molding, drywall around the electrical outlets.
- Seal all cracks on the outside of the house as well
- Make sure doors and windows are sealed well and if not add weather stripping
- Door sweeps are also a good alternative for drafty doors
- Your attic should be insulated properly as well as the basement under the first floor
- Know the “R” value of the area where you live
- If you are replacing windows or doors use low “E” glass
- Seal doors and windows tightly using weather stripping.
- A door sweep will eliminate air escaping underneath the door.
- Insulate attics and basement ceilings to keep heat in the living space of your home. (Don't insulate a crawl space if exposed to moisture or the outdoors.)
- Close off vents to rooms not being used.
- Draw curtains at night to keep heat from escaping.
- Replace furnace filters regularly so the furnace doesn't have to work as hard.
- Set your thermostat on 68 degrees in the day and 55 when sleeping.
- If replacing your windows and doors, buy a product with the Energy Star Label on it.
- Low-E Glass is a coating that will reflect infrared light keeping your living space warmer in the winter; cooler in the summer. It will also help to NOT fade your fabrics of your furniture.
