First, turn off the power by unplugging the unit or at the circuit breaker.  Use a long stick, broom handle or flat screw driver to rotate the turntable inside the disposer in both directions.  Remove any large items from the grind chamber with a set of kitchen tongs.  Once it rotates freely, turn the power back on and push the re-set button.  The unit should now work properly.

The home center models that come with “jam wrenches” are more prone to start up jams due to the low torque characteristics of their motor.  If they are jammed by something large, the only way to free them is from the top as above.  Waste King disposers are not prone to jams from soft obstructions, so they don’t come with a wrench.

Always run plenty of cold water and do not use drain cleaning chemicals in your disposer.  Avoid large bones, metal items, glass and aluminum foil.  To clean and deodorize your disposer, grind up ice or a lemon wedge.
