Condensation On Windows
Question
I replaced old windows in my mobile home with double-hung, double-glazed
tip-out windows. Now, I am getting condensation on the inside bottom
edge of the windows, about 2 inches high. There is enough moisture on
the sill to cause mold. How can I prevent that condensation?
Answer
Ah, yes, it happens every autumn, with the change of seasons and approach
of cool weather. And the Handyman has been pontificating about it for,
lo, every one of 39 autumns.
The new windows tightened up the house, and water vapor built up until
it condensed on the coolest part of the window. It usually disappears
in an hour or so, but not before mold threatens to grow. Here is how
to keep it at bay, and perhaps even prevent it.
Open the windows an inch or 2 for about five minutes in the morning
and afternoon. You will lose very little heat but will release enough
water vapor to prevent it from condensing.
