Brick Cleaning & Maintenance

QUESTION
I did a recent mortaring job and got quite a bit of mortar on the face of the bricks. No amount of scrubbing and washing got it off. How can I remove it?

ANSWER
Use the mason’s friend, muriatic acid, sold in hardware and paint stores. Use extreme caution with it, including wearing skin and eye protection. Cut it in half with water—always pour the acid into the water—and paint it onto the mortar. It will fizz up; when it stops fizzing, scrub with a scrub brush or steel bristle brush and rinse. This will remove all the mortar; if some remains, repeat. The nice thing about this technique is that it will work on the mortar the next day or 40 years later.

Question
My patio is made of red bricks, which are nice except that they're very dirty and probably have mold on them. How can I clean them?

Answer
Mix one part household bleach in three parts water and apply this to the patio; let it sit for about five minutes without evaporating (if it evaporates, add more) then scrub if necessary and rinse. Wear skin and eye protection when working with bleach. I'm not a big fan of pressure washing when it comes to this, because the brick sand will scatter and there is a possibility the brick structure will weaken.

Question
What kind of maintenance do brick floors need?

Answer
There is not much you can do for brick floors but I like to use a mixture of one gallon of warm water and one cup of vinegar. Use a clean cloth and this will cut the dirt and the grease on the tile.
