Asbestos-Cement Shingles

Question
The asbestos-cement shingles on my house are still in good condition: not cracked or broken, but the nails are pushing out, making some of the shingles loose. What is the best way to secure the shingles? I am concerned about just nailing them back in because it could damage the shingles. I have thought of replacing the shingles, but that seems like a waste since they are all in good shape.

Answer
The nails popped out because the wood they are driven into contracted when it dried out, releasing the grip of the nails. Replacing shingles sounds, at first, like a good idea, but you are right in wanting to keep them. They are not the best looking, but they have given yeoman service for many years, and will for many years to come. Besides, removing the old shingles is not just ripping off and throwing them away; they must be professionally removed at great expense. You can hammer the nails back in, but be sure to stop before the nail head hits the asbestos, because, indeed, you can crack the shingle. If the nails start to pop again, pull them out and replace them with slightly larger nails. Use a galvanized, aluminum or stainless-steel nail. It must be larger, but not so large that it does not fit into the hole in the shingle.
Here is another option: Pull out the nail, put some adhesive caulk in the nail hole, and re-drive the nail. That should hold a long while.
