Chimney Leak Question: On rainy days is it possible for water to enter my chimney, which has a stainless-steel cap? I’ve been getting leaks. Answer: Sure, especially if there is enough wind to blow the rain sideways. There are two ways this can happen. First, side-ways rain can blow through the chimney cap and drop right into the flute opening. Check to see if the clay flue liner extends above the concrete apron of the chimney; it should come up about 2 inches. If it does, the blown rain is unlikely to go down the chimney. The second way is by the blown rain penetrating un-pointed or absorbent brick. The cure there is to have a new mortar installed between brick if necessary, and have a chimney sweep coat the chimney with a masonry sealer called Chimney Saver. The sealer keeps water out but allows the bricks to breathe, to allow water vapor to go through them from the inside out. Return to the "Crusader Q&A Topics" page!If
