QUESTION: My bathroom fan exhausts through the roof, and lately it is moving much less air than it used to. How can I find out what is wrong and how can I fix it?
ANSWER: Unless the motor is failing, the only cause for reduced air flow is blockage. So, inspect the pipe at the fan end, then from the roof, if that is safe and possible. You can also clean out the pipe with a long-handled, flexible brush designed for cleaning dryer ducts. If there was a blockage, you can prevent new ones by installing an upside-down U-shaped extension on the pipe.
