Window Unit AC

Question
I am helping my daughter put in an air conditioning unit in a vinyl window. I'm having trouble getting the wings of the unit to stay in place in order to seal the unit against the outdoor heat. I'm concerned about screwing or nailing into the vinyl. Gluing might be okay, except I want to take out the unit during winter. Any ideas?

Answer
Unless there is a special way of handling the vinyl windows, I think gluing is your best bet. But instead of putting a bead of glue along the whole end of the each wing, put two or three dabs of adhesive caulking on each end; that way, you can pry of or cut off the dab of glue. I don't know if it is a great idea, but it can work.

Question
My condo is on the 4th floor, and when I put in window air-conditioners, water dripping on the metal boxes nearly did me in. The drips were so loud, gathering speed from the 9th floor roof to the 4th floor roof metal boxes. I was thinking of a rug to cover the boxes. Would the rugs do it?

Answer
The rugs would be excellent. Use indoor-outdoor carpets. I suggest holding the carpet rug in place with canvas strapping or bungee cords.
