Vinyl
Siding
Question
Part of my vinyl siding got smudged with black tar marks when the
shingles were removed to make way for the new roof. The men cleaned
and scrubbed, which took off the black, but the areas where the black
was removed is brighter than before. How can I tone down the brightness?
Answer
Sometimes scrubbing and cleaning will restore the original color of
the vinyl or paint so those areas may not be brighter but rather restored
to the original color; I say let it alone. It will eventually re-weather
to match the areas that are black.

I am thinking of putting up vinyl siding to cover white cedar shingles.
The white cedar shingles get moldy and the mold comes back after treatment.
Will mold grow on vinyl siding?

Yes, Mold will grow on vinyl siding, and your problem will continue.
Mold will grow on a damp surface. Treat it with bleach and water.

Question
I am having my house vinyl-sided. There is little water damage on the
present siding, which I believed is hard board, which someone said was
a composite material. Should I remove the old siding or could they put
vinyl siding over it? Which is best?
Answer
Vinyl siders are often eager to slap their siding over anything,
covering up the problem rather trying to correct it. Get rid of that
hardboard, which is indeed a composite material. After that, have the
siders put up a 3/8-inch thick Styrofoam insulation. It will keep the
house warm in the winter but, more important, will eliminate potential
moisture.

Question
I am adding a second story to my cottage and would like to have vinyl
siding on both the old part, which has wood shingles
and the new
part, which has no siding. The contractor would take off the old wood
shingles on the first floor. Is this necessary? It's pretty costly to
do that, and I wonder if I really need to.
Answer
The contractor was right. While vinyl siding is often put over old siding,
it will not work in this case because the face of the shingle wall of
the first floor is sticking out farther than the uneven second floor.
Also, If you put vinyl or any kind of siding on old siding, the windows
will look indented
and, you will get a smoother and better job
if you can put up Tyvek and 3/8 inch Styorfoam insulation, plus the,
on the bare sheathing.
