Tub & Shower Enclosures
Question
I need a new tub and shower enclosure. What is the best way to go? I
hear so many things about the new materials and I'm confused. And, being
out there in the boondocks, I am not sure what is available?
Answer
For starters, you may not have to replace anything. Consider covering
both tub and enclosure with an acrylic shell and covering. This technique
is an answer to reglazing, and while it is more expensive than reglazing,
it's better. The main thing to be aware of is a positive seal between
the tub and shell to prevent water from getting into that space between
the tub and shell. If that happens, the water will become stagnant and
it can smell really bad. That brings us to replacements. Best is a cast
iron tub, with surround of acrylic or fiberglass, or ceramic tile. While
cast iron porcelain enamel tub is best, it is not the most practical
and very expensive. Another choice is acrylic, relatively new. Another
choice is fiberglass, tried and true but with it's own weaknesses, such
as chipping or cracking.
