Drilling Into Tile
Question
I am installing a brass soap dish on the new tile of a shower stall.
The dish will be secured with four screws. I bought a special bit for
tile and glass, and drilled into the grout line instead of into the
tile. Trouble is, I broke the bit twice. How can I drill those holes
without breaking bits? I plan to drill the holes into cement board behind
the tile and insert a special bolt to hold the unit.
Answer
I think the special bit, which has little paddles at the business end,
is breaking when it hits the sides of the tile. So, drill into the tile,
not the grout line. You can use the special bit directly into the tile,
or you can use an ordinary bit at low speed. If you want to make a hole
¼ inch wide, start with a ? inch bit and finish with the ¼
inch bit, all on low speed. I have drilled holes in tile and, to my
amazement, did not break it.
