Soot Intrusion
QUESTION
I have black soot coming into one bedroom and I just can’t figure
why. I have oil-fired forced hot water heat with radiators. The windows are
70 years old, as old as the house. There is a bit of insulation in the
walls, but not much. Why is it occurring in only one room?
ANSWER
Soot created by the chimney may be leaking in from the outside, into
the windows of that one room. But why one room? I suggest you seal the
windows with plastic; to see if that’s the culprit. You can also caulk
around window frames on the inside, and along baseboards, to stop
infiltration. If all this makes a difference, you can weather strip the
windows in that room so they are really, really tight, and hope the soot
doesn’t find other holes to enter.
Another option is to clean the chimney and tune up the oil burner )or
replace it with one that is higher in efficiency and produces less soot), if
it is 20 or so years old.
