Smelly Fixtures

Question
I have a weird problem. About a year ago I gutted and redid the bathroom, and installed American Standard brushed chrome fixtures. About 6 months ago, the fixtures started to smell musty, and like ammonia. The bath also smells musty. The lever that moves the tub stopper is particularly bad. I took it apart and treated it with bleach and water, without success. The shower does not smell, but one of the drains smells. The wall, tile and tub smell okay, but one handle shower control smells bad. Even stranger, the fixtures do not smell when they are wet. A plumber suggested that there might have been a reaction between a cleaner and the metal. We did have a leak that spoiled one of the first-floor ceilings, but that was fixed. I said it was weird, didn't I?

Answer
It certainly is! I thought I'd heard everything until now! But from what you described, I think it is brushed chrome or whatever that metal is. Call American Standard to see if the people there have any ideas. Don't take a simple no for an answer. I don't think there is anything else you can do, but pouring a cup of bleach into the drain trap and leaving it over night wont hurt, and may do some good clearing out the musty smell. Do not mix with anything else but water. Wear skin and eye protection when working with bleach. If you used ammonia or an ammonia product to clean the fixtures, do not pour the bleach into the traps; Ammonia and bleach can cause a deadly chlorine gas.
