Siding / Window / Roof Installation
QUESTION
I plan to install replacement windows, a new roof, new siding
shingle (white cedar) and a four-season room. What should I do first,
and then what is done in what order? What if I want whole new windows,
frames and all, instead of replacement sash?
ANSWER
Do the four-season room last. That way you can clean up the mess and
install grass and landscaping at your leisure, and no one will get in
the way of the crew.
For the rest, the order is: roof, then replacement windows and finally, siding shingles. If you install whole windows, frames and all, they would go in second as well. But generally, if the casing (frames) and sill are intact, there is no need for whole windows. And, to back up a little, you can install replacement windows any time, starting now.
Incidentally, there is no better choice for siding than white cedar shingles. They will weather nicely without treatment. Expose them 5 inches to the weather and they are unlikely to curl or warp. Forty years later, your grandchildren can put up new ones.
