Showers

QUESTION
I would like to get rid of the sliders in the shower of my newly purchased second home. How can I remove the grout left on the cast-iron tub, and how can I fill the holes left in the tile walls after taking off the frame? The grout is actually a sort of dirty green adhesive.

ANSWER
Remove the adhesive with chemical paint remover. Citristrip is a mild stripper, good enough for that adhesive. For the holes in the tile left by the removed screws, fill them with joint compound, and touch up with a matching enamel.

Question
My shower stall is completely tiled: walls, floor and ceiling. I have to hang a fixture on the
wall but I cannot find the studs, which are behind the cement board behind the tiles. How can I find the studs without taking them apart?

Answer
You can use an electronic stud finder…that is if you haven't already tried one. Here's a trick you might try: if the wall of the stall is an interior wall, say with the closet or room on the other side, you could locate a stud in that other room, then drill a small hole beside the stud through the cement board and tile, carefully (a very small hole with a skinny bit). Then measure 16" from the hole to locate the other studs.

Question
I have not used one of my showers for over 5 years. What will happen if I try to turn it on? Will there be a lot of rust?

Answer
Probably nothing bad. Possible results may be that you cannot turn the value on and off, In that case, call a plumber. If you are able to turn it on, you might get rusty water for a while but it will clear up.
