Organic Shingles vs. Fiberglass Shingles

QUESTION
In a recent story on roofing, you recommended organic shingles as opposed to fiberglass. Why?
Also, I have a crawl space behind a knee wall in my house, with soffit vents and an insulated, vented roof leading to a ridge vent.  The soffit vents are 2 ½ inches wide and 8 inches long; there is one on each bay between rafters, and a perforated aluminum cover was put over the soffit.  I have a leak on the roof that will soon be fixed.  There is mold on the ceiling of the crawl space.  I know how to get rid of it with bleach and water, but how can I keep it from returning?

ANSWER
I like organic shingles, ones with a saturated felt core instead of a fiberglass core, because I think they are much sturdier than fiberglass, and I think they will last longer.  Also, some fiberglass shingles have failed long before their time, resulting in a huge class-action suit.  I think the manufacturers have fixed this defect- only tow brands were involved – and you can be confident that fiberglass shingles will perform up to their specs.

The mold in the crawl space is caused partly by that roof leak, which overpowered the venting system, but I think inadequate ventilation is more the cause.  Your ridge vent is adequate, but the 8-inch-long soffit vents are inadequate, venting only half  the space between rafters.  To prevent the mold from returning, get rid of the perforated aluminum, which is blocking air flow, and replace the short vents with a continuous louvered strip 2 inches wide and the full length of the soffit.
