Roof Rafters
Question
My house has exposed rafters that overhang the edge of the roof, which
is a part of its design. Trouble is, the new roof is Thermax insulation
under a rubber roof and the nails holding the Thermax in position are
coming through the sheathing, and are rusting. I'm going to have the
nail points cut, but how can I keep them from containing rust.
Answer
The nail points will continue to rust as long as they are exposed,
no matter how short they are cut. You could try coating each with Rust
Reformer, a brand of phosphoric acid, which will turn the nails black
and make them paintable with a rust resistant paint. Short of that,
you could box in the eaves, but that would change the style. Another
possibility: After cutting the nails, cover the sheathing with quarter-inch
plywood and prime and paint that.
