Power Vents

Question
I had my heating system converted from oil to gas, and had a choice of a power vent or venting up the chimney. I opted for a power vent, but now we are losing heat through the vent. What is wrong, and what can I do about it?

Answer
A power vent does lose a significant amount of heated house air, or at least should not, given proper installation. The vent, in which cool fumes are exhausted through the wall through a vent, also brings in outside air (usually in the outside wall jacket of the vent, or a separate vent.) to allow combustion. No house air is used for combustion and no house air, essentially, is exhausted. Check the installation. Also, make sure the damper on the old chimney is shut, unless another appliance uses the chimney. Also make sure the power vent is not covered with debris. Normally a vent that is covered will shut off automatically, but if the unit is defective, that shutoff might never occur, resulting in possible infiltration of carbon monoxide.
