Messy Spills
QUESTION
My daughter dropped a gallon of milk on our hardwood floor in the kitchen yesterday. Today, we noticed that the milk had seeped through the floor and leaked into the basement. Although we cleaned up the mess, I am concerned that milk may be trapped within the floor and, over time, may turn sour and smell. Do you have any ideas on how to clean up the trapped spill? I know that I shouldn’t be crying over it.
ANSWER
A whole gallon? That is a lot, but there is hope. Since you sopped up most of it, pour water on the floor to allow it to seep into the joints and into the basement, diluting the milk, in effect. Since moisture goes right through, you can use a fair amount of water. Then let everything dry out. You might even put a hair dryer on it. If the milk is diluted enough, it is unlikely to smell, pour a bit of household bleach into the cracks. Or, spray Febreze into the cracks. Let me know if the cockamamie idea works.
