Linoleum Removal

QUESTION: I want to remove the linoleum from my kitchen floor. The seams already are coming up. What is the best way to do that?

ANSWER: Heat the linoleum with a hair dryer (a hot air gun is too hot and is an indoor fire hazard). Then scrape with brute force. The best scraper is a long-handled one that looks like an old-fashioned ice cutter or scraper. The long handle lets you put your back into it.  You could also rent a power scraper, which might make the work easier.

Question
When I pulled up the linoleum in my kitchen, the backing remained on the floor. It is an off-white paper and it is about 20 years old. How can I get rid of it?

Answer
Don't do anything until you have it tested. It may contain asbestos. To find out, cut a small piece off, put it in a plastic envelope and take it to a testing lab. You can find testing labs in the yellow pages under "Laboratories, Testing." The color of that paper and the fact that it is 20 years old make it suspect.

Question
Is there any easy way to remove linoleum that has been on the floor for 20-30 years?

Answer

No easy way! You have to use brute force and heat. If you are very careful, you can heat the linoleum with a hot-air gun, but be mighty careful: that air is 700 to 1,000 degrees; wood burns at about 500 degrees. The heat will soften the adhesive so you can scrape it up with a long-handled heavy-duty scraper. You have to put your back into it. If it has a gray or white backing, it may contain asbestos and will have to be removed by professionals. However if it's sticking well, why bother removing it? You can put new tiles over it, ceramic or resilient…or, indoor-outdoor carpeting.
