Kitchen Tile
Question
About a year ago, I tiled my kitchen with white 16x16 tile with silver
running through it. It's beautiful. Then I noticed it was getting yellow
and dirty, and even a cleaning machine could not get the dirt off. I
was getting desperate. I have used strippers and sealers, but the tile
remains sticky and dirt adheres to it. The back of the tile is red,
and I think it is supposed to be ceramic; part of the inscription on
the back of each tile is "single fired" Can you help? I used
to love the floor but now I hate it, and I can't afford to redo it.
Answer
It sounds like the tile is ceramic, but unglazed, which makes it impossible
to keep clean. When you can afford to replace the stuff, specify glazed
tile, which can be cleaned with a wet sponge. I think your only chance
for success is this: Make a double-strong solution of Spic and Span,
spread this heavy on the floor and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes and
do not allow it to evaporate. This may loosen the dirt and hold it in
suspension. Scrub with a brush; wipe up all the solution and rinse.
If this works, seal the floor with a masonry sealer or a tile sealer
once a year.
