Jacuzzi

Question
The caulking around my Jacuzzi tub keeps slipping between the tub and the tile. It is a nuisance to keep caulking every few weeks. The gap is about an inch.. The contractor not the installer said the lip of the tub is wrong. Is there a way to fix it, so the caulking does not ooze down and disappear?

Answer
I think so. I don't think there is anything wrong with the lip. The gap is too wide for any caulking, and I'll bet there is a lot of space there that no amount of caulking will fill. The caulking that goes in has no backing and will disappear even after it sets. So, you could do one or two things: Press in oakum, an oily rope that is used for caulking boats, until it nearly fills the cavity, except at boat shops, but you don't have to use oakum; Instead, buy a polyethylene rope caulk that will work just as well. Fill the capacity, and then caulk the rest with a good adhesive caulk. The other trick is better but more work. Take out that old caulk, then buy some 4 1/4-cap tiles, those with a curved top and used to top off a wall of tile. Attached them to the bottom row of tiles around the tub, leaving a minimum gap between tub and tile of 1/8 inch. Use a thin-set mortar to attached these tiles. After grouting them, fill the gap with a generous bead of adhesive caulk, smooth it of and press it in. The caulk will ooze the gap, making a secure bead.
