Homemade Floor Polish
Question
I’ve heard that you can use olive oil to polish wood furniture
and floors. Is this true and can you list some other recipes?
Answer
The old-fashioned polish with olive oil is: 1&1/3 pints olive oil,
2/3 pint alcohol and 1 teaspoon vinegar. You’ll get the best results
from more rubbing with less polish. Be aware that if you leave excessive
oil on the surface, it can become rancid. If you are concerned about
that, substitute mineral oil.
Here’s another: 1 tablespoon turpentine, 3 tablespoons boiled linseed
oil, 1 quart hot water. Keep solution hot in double boiler; rub surface
with cloth wet with solution, then polish with dry cloth.
And a third: 4 ounces paint thinner, 4 ounces vinegar, 1 ounce alcohol,
4 ounces boiled linseed oil. Apply with fine steel wool.
And finally, my sister’s formula: 1 gallon warm water, 1 cup vinegar,
½ cup ammonia, ¼ cup baking soda. It provides a shockingly
high shine. All formulas are good for furniture. Those with the least
amount of oil are good for floors.
