Hollow Core Doors

Question
I have several hollow core doors that I would like to replace with either solid wood or at least better looking hollow doors. I know I have to mortise a recess for the hinges, but how do I make sure to mortise (and drill) exactly the right spot so that the hinges line up with the existing hinge on the doorjamb? It seems to me that if they are off even a small amount, it will be almost impossible to fit.

Answer
I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of the hollow core doors, but don't just get better hollow doors. Any hollow door acts like a drum, and any noise or sound in the house is increased by bouncing against those drum-like doors. So, buy solid pine-paneled doors. They are more expensive than even the hardboard hollow doors, but look much better and are well worth it. You could also buy hollow doors filled with rigid insulation, which would be similar to a solid wood door. As for lining up the hinges, if the new doors are the same size as those being replaced, you can line up the new door with the old and transfer the position of the hinge that way. Or, set the door in the opening, put a thin piece of wood under the door to provide the correct space, and transfer the position of the hinge on the jamb to the door edge. With a little care, it will work every time.

One extra tip: When marking the position of the hinges, use a utility knife to mark it; it is more accurate than a pencil, and you can make an exact mortise that the hinge can fit into.
