Florida Roofing Wind Warranty

Question
I live in Baton Rouge and need to have my roof re-shingled. My question concerns the new shingles that are designed to stand up to "High Velocity Wind Zones." I have a friend that lives in Fort Myers Florida that works for a roofing contractor. He told me that if one chooses the common seal tab asphalt shingle to re-roof a house in Fort Myers, which Florida now requires a special type of seal tab asphalt shingle that meets the new codes in what they define as a "High Velocity Wind Zone." Can you elaborate any on this subject.

Answer
In Dade and Broward Counties, the products must meet and be labeled as Miami-Dade product control approved. There are other coastal counties that have adopted the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) requirements, which have the same application procedures as Miami-Dade but do not require the products to be labeled with Miami-Dade product control approval.

For Miami-Dade and HVHZ, the shingles must pass the following test protocols:

- ASTM D3462
- PA 100 (110 mph uplift and wind driven rain resistance)
- PA 107 (Modified ASTM D3161 Class F - 110 mph wind uplift resistance)
- Class A Fire Rating (ASTM D3018)

NOTE: The shingle manufacturers' wind warranty is separate and distinct from code compliance

All products shipped to Louisiana from Elk, except Prestique Cool Color Series, have statewide Florida Building Code approval and are Miami-Dade product control approved and labeled. The PA 100 and PA 107 testing for Elk was performed with four nails per shingle. Visit the Elk web site at www.elkcorp.com for information regarding Elk roofing products, specifications, limited warranties, products eligible for extended wind warranties and the installation requirements.
