Fences

Question
I have a question regarding fence repair. I have a 4-foot chain link fence in need of an upgrade. I would like to convert to a cedar or cypress fence to gain more privacy. I would like it to be about 6 or 7 feet. I can't pull down what I already have up as the property rights have changed so repair is only thing open. My question is can I install a larger pipe over current 4 foot ones, drill hole through both pipes and secure with bolts? Would I have enough strength because of greater service area? Would I have to enlarge the footing and if so can you make a suggestion?
Thanks in advance
Don Laughlin

Answer
You're right…you cannot add any additional post to your existing fence or extend your current post to meet your desired height, because the post will not be strong enough to handle the additional weight and wind load. The first heavy wind that comes will tear this fence. So this is my suggestion that you should do. First build a new wooden or vinyl fence about 1 ft inside or behind your current fence with the boards to the outside, then you could either leave that ole chain link fence to tear it down, you will loose about a foot of property space but you still own the fence to the property line.
