Exposed Fiberglass
Question
When I bought my house recently, the men who came in to do some work
said, "look at the exposed fiberglass in the basement ceiling.
Uncovered, it can be hazardous to your health, and should be covered
with plastic." That is scary. What can I do?
Answer
It is scary, partly true. The expose fiberglass can be a hazard if you
brush against or hit it with a broom, releasing non-biodegradable bits
of glass. It is unlikely that you will release those bits, but to make
you and your men feel better, cover the fiberglass with Tyvek, which
will allow the water vapor to go through it in both directions and keep
the fiberglass in place. Simply staple the Tyvek to the bottom of the
joists. Do not use plastic; it might trap moisture behind it.
