Drainage QUESTION ANSWER General rules: First, check with the town to see if you can drain floodwater on your property on your property to a culvert. Make the ditch 18 inches deep and 12 inches wide, and before you install a pipe, fill the trench with ¾ inch crushed stone. If that filled trench does drain the water to the culvert, then you can take some of the crushed stone out and put in a perforated pipe, cover it with tarpaper and put more stone back in, then cover with earth and sod it over. And of course, slope the pipe ever so slightly.
