Drainage

QUESTION
I get a substantial stream of water through my garage every year, and I would like to put in a drainage system to guide that water around the garage and down beside my driveway to a culvert. At least most of the water. How big of a trench should I dig, and what kind of pipe should I put in?

ANSWER
I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules, but I think your best bet is to hire a landscaper or waterproofing company to do the job right. Not that you cannot do it, but if you have a pro do it, you can withhold money  if it doesn’t work.

General rules: First, check with the town to see if you can drain floodwater on your property on your property to a culvert. Make the ditch 18 inches deep and 12 inches wide, and before you install a pipe, fill the trench with ¾ inch crushed stone.

If that filled trench does drain the water to the culvert, then you can take some of the crushed stone out and put in a perforated pipe, cover it with tarpaper and put more stone back in, then cover with earth and sod it over. And of course, slope the pipe ever so slightly.
