Crown Molding
Question
I am trying to install crown molding in my house, on the top of the
wall next to the ceiling. I have cut and cut and cut and cannot seem
to get the right angle to fit the corner. I have a small miter saw,
but still this task has been difficult. How can I do it so the angle
will fit properly in the corners?
Answer
The problem with mitering (cutting the molding at a 45-degree angle)
is that the crown molding does not work mitered into a corner. You need
to cope the molding; that is cut the end of one of the molding, so it
fits right against the molding to the profile of the molding, so it
fits right against the molding on the other wall. To do this, you need
a miter and coping saw. Trim the molding at a 45-degree angle. The remaining
profile serves as a guideline for the coping saw. Trim away the edge
at another 45-degree angle. If this seems like to much , you can buy
plastic crown moldings that has special adapter pieces for inside and
outside corners.
