QUESTION
I am redoing my kitchen and am having a bit of trouble finding a
good counter material. Granite is too expensive and I have not found a
laminate I like. I don’t care much for ceramic tile. What do you
suggest?
ANSWER
Yes, granite is expensive but there is another disadvantage, in my
opinion: It has to be sealed once a year or it will tend to stain.
Corian, while it can look like granite, is also expensive, but it does
not need sealing and is easily cleaned.
That brings us to glazed ceramic tile, 6-by-6 inches, which is easily washed with water. To make the grout lines tolerable, use a dark color—black is good if you can get it—and it will not show mold and dirt. And if you like granite tiles, they are less expensive than slab granite, though they still need to be regularly sealed.
