Carpet Removal

Question
I want to take up my wall-to-wall carpeting; after 20 years, I want my hardwood floors back. Is it a big job to remove the carpet and pad? A carpet company said it would remove them for $250. Is that a reasonable cost?

Answer
Yes, $250 is reasonable. But given time and energy, you or an assistant can do it in a short time. The carpet is held at the edges with a nailing strip, a strip of wood with pointed nails facing up, on which the carpet is impaled. Using a pinch bar, flat bar, or any kind of prying instrument, put an edge of the tool under the strip and pry it up. It is nailed down and will take some oomph to pull up. The nail holes will show on the floor, but you can fill them with wood filler and they will virtually disappear. The pad might stick a bit to the floor, but you can scrape it up carefully to prevent damage to the hardwood. Wet the pad with paint thinner to help release it. Any pad left after pulling up the gross part can be softened with paint thinner enough so it can be scraped up with a wood spatula. Go for it!
