Michael King...THE HOME IMPROVEMENT CRUSADER!

Using Wood Filler, Spackle or Joint Compound

QUESTION
In my newly purchase three-decker, the previous tenant painted the bead-board woodwork. Cracks appeared between the boards, so I filled them with Redi-Patch, a wood filler. The material hardened up nicely, and I repainted. Now the joints are cracking again. What’s wrong? And how can I fix it?

ANSWER
The same thing happens when you put a hardening material such as Spackle or joint compound in cracks in ceilings or walls. The plaster cracks when the ceiling moves, or in your case, the wood expands and contracts. The hardening materials simply cannot move, therefore cracks.

That is why it does not work. The cure for your bead-board is to scrape out all the hard stuff and put in an adhesive caulk, one that will not only stay in the joint but also will not crack.
