QUESTION: The rooms in my beach house are floored with sheet vinyl, which is in pretty bad shape after years of tracking sand across them. I was thinking of putting down laminate, the Formica-looking floor. Would this stand up to all that grit?
ANSWER: Don't count on it; it is a very hard finish and while it is usually warranted for 15 years, grains of sand under feet and shoes are sure to make their mark. The only thing that will work is ceramic tile. If cost is a factor, you should stick with the sheet vinyl.
