SEWER GAS ODORS QUESTION: We get some pretty strong sewer gas odors in our house, but only when we open the first-floor windows. A plumber extended the five soil pipes coming through the roof without success. There does not seem to be a problem with the leaching field of the septic system; the field is dry. What is happening and how can we prevent that? ANSWER: First, check the pipe leading to the septic tank and from the tank to the leaching field. A broken pipe could be the problem. It is possible that the wind wafts down the roof, and blows over the soil stacks, bringing the exhaust odor down to the ground. The cure is to put and upside-down U-shaped extension on the pipes. When exhaust fumes come out of the pipe downward, they are unlikely to waft down to the ground. Return to the "Crusader Q&A Topics" page! If
