Matching Colors Question: I left a buffet too close to a window and part of the top was hit by rain. It took some of the color out of the top and also raised the grain. Can I sand that down? I know how to finish furniture, but how can I get a color match? Answer: You can sand the grain down. If the discoloration is in the wood and the wood is bare, you can try matching it with a Min-wax oil-based stain. Or, pick a color that is compatible with the rest of the buffet and buy a Poly-Shades—a modern version of the old varnish stain made by Min-wax—match of this color.
